Who

Many disciplines, one craft.

Thirty years on stages, more than twenty-five in software: two careers grown from the same habit, taking things apart to see what’s inside.

Magic taught me how people actually see: what they notice, what they assume, and what they walk right past. Software taught me what happens when those assumptions get built into systems. Eventually I stopped treating them as separate careers.

Richard Hamming called it the essential unity of all knowledge. Disciplines are a filing system people invented; reality doesn’t play by those rules. The idea that cracks a problem in one field is usually sitting unnoticed in another, which is why I’ve never been willing to pick a lane, and why I distrust silos, whether they hold knowledge, teams, or data.

That way of working has taken me from individual contributor to CTO and back again, across data, architecture, and AI. Today I help leadership teams turn ambitious technology bets into systems that pay off.

I’m the author of Mastering Software Architecture (Apress, 2025) and The Semantic Blueprint (working title; Packt, 2027). Over the past twelve years I’ve given thousands of talks around the world, teaching engineers and leaders how to see the systems they build. I still perform, too, for rooms where the magic means something.

The thread through all of it: find what everyone agreed was impossible, find the assumption holding it there, and build the thing that works anyway. Then I teach the thinking that found it, so your next miracle doesn’t need me.
